Abstract
|
In the recent decade, academic culture has served as a major factor affecting the success of academic organizations and has drawn the attention of the sociological scholars working on the organization and management. In the Age of Knowledge the academic leaders are expected to play an active role through investing in academic culture in tackling the obstacles facing society and industry, besides identifying and creating methods of knowledge production. Thus, the present paper as its main purpose set to explore the relationship between disciplinary culture and various types of academic culture. To this end, we attempted to discover the latent links between the two categories in light of the theories advanced by Bergquist, Tony Becher, etc. The statistical population of this survey research included Cochran's theorem. The statistical approaches involved the difference of means test and multivariate regression. The statistics and data obtained from the distributed questionnaires were processed using SPSS 17 solution. The results suggested a significant difference between the academic culture predominating in each of the faculties of the university. It was also found out that the collegial culture characterized by production and interpretation of knowledge, researches favored by the faculty members, academic discretion, the possibility for the professors to study in their specialties, predominance of rationality, and independence, represented the prevailing culture. Finally, the power of the applied independent variables in explaining the variance of the dependent variables was 34.5 percent, with the remaining being related to effect of other variables beyond the scope of the present work.
