the wisdom of storytelling in the museum’s design process

Authors kazemi mohammad
Abstract    museum designing is a three-dimensional and hybrid process. it interconnectsvarious disciplines such as architecture, graphic design, interior design, audiovisualgraphics, and print graphics. museum’s transformation during the1930s is the main reason that drives storytelling to be adopted in the dailydisplay routine of museums. storytelling communicates meanings andmediates human knowledge of the world, humans, and architecture. verbalstorytelling, written storytelling, visual storytelling, and spatial storytellinghelp all age groups to communicate with the collections of the museums. inthis paper, we investigate the role of the different kinds of storytelling in themuseum's design process. we use an original survey of meaning andinterpretation drawn from the fields of philosophy, linguistics, hermeneutics, humanistic geography, narrative theory, psychology, architectural theory andmuseology. in addition, we use researchers' personal perceptions andexperiences. this study uses two case studies (australian national maritimemuseum and hong kong museum of history) to demonstrate how museumsare currently utilizing storytelling and show the fundamental tools for itssuccess. the results of this paper indicate that our understanding of masternarratives needs more time and focus. the master narrative has to be followedand leaves little space for unrestricted meaning-making. furthermore, in thenon-linear storytelling, each thematic display can establish a separate identity.then, museum architecture suggests a delightful environment for communicating meanings by self-learning and organized embodiedexperience of an entire space.
