Abstract    this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of flipped learning instruction on the critical thinking and academic engagement of fifth-grade students in science course. a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test control group design was employed. the population of the study consisted of all fifth-grade elementary students in ahvaz during the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. a sample of 30 male students was selected using a convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, each with 15 participants. the research instruments were the ricketts critical thinking skills test (2003) and the reeve academic engagement questionnaire (2013). the experimental group received 8 ninety-minute sessions (two sessions per week) of flipped learning instruction based on the protocol of bergmann and sams (2014), while the control group received no intervention. the collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance. the results showed that flipped learning instruction had a significant positive effect on students’ academic engagement (f=947.47, p<0.05) and critical thinking (f=255.93, p<0.05). flipped learning instruction, as a novel teaching method, has the potential to improve the quality of education. by providing more opportunities for active and interactive learning, it helps students enhance their critical thinking and academic engagement skills.
