چکیده    In this paper, a brief summary ofdifferent methods of fabrication of opticalpreform and fiber is reviewed. several methodsof incorporation of erbium ions into opticalpreforms are studied. characterization of thefabricated erbium doped fibers includingmeasurements of refractive index profile,absorption, fluorescence and gain spectra andmetastable lifetime are described. it is alsoexpressed that many of these fabrication andcharacterization methods are feasible to becarried out in iran.
