strategic assessment of EVS regulation during simultaneous interpreting

As a temporal aspect of simultaneous interpreting (51) and a variable susceptibleto source language (5l) factors, ear-voice span (ev5) has been used as a reliablemeasure of both interpreter's cognitive processing and the quality of his output(barik, 2002; gile, 2008; goldman-eisler, 1980). this study sets out to measuretemporally and linguistically the ev5 patterns adopted by a professionalinterpreter during persian-english 51 alongside a strategic assessment of his ev5regulation. the speaker's and interpreter's outputs were collected in a realconference setting. with the aid of sound forge, a comparative analysis wasmade on synchronized 5l-tl wave files to detectdifferent ev5 patterns adopted bythe interpreter. following the detection of ev5 patterns, an intertextual assessmentof interpretations was carriedout to detect the types of ev5 regulation strategies.quite commensurate with goldman-eisler's (1972) findings, the results fromlinguistic ev5 measurement indicated that the 5l verb is a main determinant ofmeaning and a reliable point of departure for the interpreter to commenceinterpreting. however, shorter ev5 patterns like np, np+np and np+pp were alsofound to act as interpretation openers and the interpreter facing the verb-laststructure of persian input did not always give out long ev5 patterns, butstrategically opted for shortand optimal vp-iess ev5 patterns with reliance on aset of regulation strategies to eschew insidious cognitive overloadand present asuccessful 51 performance. from didactic optique, it is recommended that the ev5regulation strategies detected in this study like skipping, filtering, generalization,stalling, chunking and anticipation couldbe wiselyincorporated intoan interpretertraining syllabus.
