تبیین و نقد نگاه فیلیپس به گرامر دعا

فیلیپس با نگاهی ناشناخت‌گرایانه به زبان دین معتقد است در گرامر دعا نباید به دنبال اثبات موجودی متعالی به عنوان متعلق نیایش بود، بلکه باید اولویت را به تبیین معناداری دعا در نحوۀ زندگی دینی داد. فیلیپس با مقایسۀ سحر و دعا نشان می‌دهد که این دو شیوه‌هایی فراطبیعی برای تحصیل مطلوب تلقی می‌شوند، با این تفاوت که اهمیت دعا برای متدینان در تغییری است که در زندگانی ایشان ایجاد می‌کند. از سوی دیگر، ساحر معتقد است اوراد وی دارای تاثیر عینی بر پدیده‌ها است، اما متدینان چنین نگاهی به ادعیه ندارند. فیلیپس نتیجه می‌گیرد که دعا امری درونی است و معنای آن صحبت کردن با خدا درباره رنج‌ها و آرزوها است. دعا برای متدینان تلاش جهت یافتن معنا و امیدی است که ایشان را از عوامل مخرب زندگی نجات می‌دهد. از همین روست که دعاکننده می‌تواند الوهیت خدا را در دعا درک کند. دیدگاه فیلیپس دچار دور است، نگاه هنجاری (دستوری) او در خصوص معنای دعا با نظریۀ بازی‌های زبانی ویتگنشتاین در تضاد قرار دارد، و ایدۀ او دربارۀ وجه تمایز دعا از جادو با مبانی پوزیتیویستی وی در تعارض است.

Phillips on the Grammar of Prayer: A Critical Approach

Having a noncognitivist approach to religious language, Phillips believes that in the grammar of prayer, the demonstration of a transcendent entity as its object is not of priority; The explanation of its meaningfulness within the religious form of life is of priority. Comprising prayer and incantation, he shows that although people consider both transphysical ways for achieving goals, the importance of any prayer for a believer roots in the change it makes in her life. The magician maintains the efficacy of chants; A believer does not have the same view about prayer. Basing on these differences, Phillips concludes that prayer as an internal reality means talking to God about griefs and wishes. Prayer for believers is an attempt to find meaning and hope that saves them from the damaging factors in their life. That is why the praying person can understand God’s divinity in prayer. In examining Phillips’ theory about prayer, it will be revealed that his theory is circular and in opposition to Wittgensteinian languagegame theory. Additionally, I will show that his dicta about the difference between prayer and incantation contrast with some of the positivistic elements of his philosophy.
