The Human Microbiome: There is Much Left to Do

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the first major survey of microbial diversity in the human body, published in the journal Nature by the Human Microbiome Project Society, of which I was a member. Before that, microbiologists knew that the body is a host for a large group of living organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which are spread over the surface of the skin, mouth, and gut, collectively known as the microbiome.
