چکیده
|
جان فون نویمان یکی از برجستهترین ریاضیدانان قرن بیستم است که آثار شگفتانگیزش نقش عمدهای در شکلگیری ریاضیات معاصر هم از نوعِ محض و هم از نوع کاربردی داشته است. متن زیر، که در سال 1947 میلادی منتشر شد، بدون فرض گرفتن آشنایی عمیق مخاطب با ریاضیات، دیدگاه نویسنده را دربارهٔ سرشت ریاضیات با زبان غیرتخصصی و در شکل فشردهای ارائه میکند. عنوان اصلی متن «ریاضیدان» است که در ترجمهٔ فارسی به عنوان فعلی تغییر یافته است تا بهتر گویای موضوع مقاله باشد. م.

Abstract
|
this is a translation of an article written by john von neumann, one of the most outstanding mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose works have played a major role in shaping contemporary mathematics-- both pure and applied. without assuming the audience's deep familiarity with mathematics, the author elaborates his point of view about the dual nature of mathematics (dependence on experimental sciences, and independence from them). in the interest of better reflecting the content of the article, the original title the mathematician has been changed to the current one.
